80 THE YOUNG PRINCE

Grandmother remembers well the little plumb boy whose skin was so fairand his eyes were glittering. As soon as he could talk, he never stoppedtalking. He could see so far and hear so soft. He told his parents, "Iam the son of the King. I was a royal descendant -a prince who was bornin the house of the peasant. I was sent down to earth to help a poorcouple and to help the people ". This is his destiny and he maintainedthis belief all his life.

Even before he died he was told by many shamans that "the King (in theworld beyond) is waiting for you to help him to rule the country". Hefelt so strong about this that he recorded his last message to his motherin Australia to say good-bye.

He was the smallest in the family but he always claimed that he was thestrongest and the best; he was quick with his words and fast with hisactions. He performed brilliantly during his early schooling with hisolder brother, Neng Chu and passed an entry examination at Xiengkhouang. But his school was abruptly interrupted due to hardship in the family. Many years later, he returned to school when he was already married withone child, Chia .

The return to school was precipitated by a different kind of hardshipthat the family had received from some section of the Hmong LyAuthority.

Grandfather, Nyiaj Lwm, was very upset about what happen to our family. He was wealthy, respected and well known but he was not educated. Hediscovered that education seems to be the dividing line between ourfamily and the Hmong authority felt very strongly that the only way toeducation should be a priority for the family to have education.Education became a necessity regardless the price that needs to be paid.

Thus uncle Thaochay was sent back to school in Xieng Khouang leaving hiswife and son behind. It was during this time that he met his second wife(the mother of Thao Kao who is in Ban Vinai camp), a daughter of Nao KoLy, one of the Ly authority in Xiengkhouang.

This marriage was an unusual one but it marked the turning point in uncleThaochay's life. As the Hmong Ly were influential during that period, this marriage brought him closer to the Hmong elite who put heavypressure on Thao Chay to better himself. Association with success peoplebreeds more success.

Seeing his potential, Touby Ly Fong, the Hmong leader, made him a publicservant and gave him a scholarship to attend law school in Saigon formany years.

Returning home, he worked at the Ministry of Interior in Xieng Khouang asthe treasurer until 1960. Following the Kong Le coup d'etat, theprovincial office was moved from Xieng Khouang and later was establishedin Samthong. Uncle Thaochay was "on loan to the army" from 1961.
During the crisis in the 1960's, Vang Pao, a major in the Lao army, became the leader of the Hmong in Laos. Fleeing from the Plain of Jars,Vang Pao spent more than one month begging the Hmong Ly to help him.Seeing his potential, the Hmong Ly helped him to rally all the Hmongaround Xiengkhouang. Thao Chay was one of them. He became Vang Pao'sright hand man during the war in Laos.

In 1961, he was posted in Vientaine where he built a two-storey house in1962 - a house that he planned as achild. It was a five-bedroom house -2bed rooms, a living room and a toilet on the ground floor -3 bedroomswith living room, toilet and a balcony on the 1st floor. The kitchen wasjoined at the northern by a veranda. There are two garages at thenorth-west end. To the south, there was the front entrance and a largeopen veranda. On each of the four facets of the house, the three-headedelephant symbols are visibly built. This is to be the second house tobear this symbol (the first house is the King's palace) in Vientaine.

He moved to work in Thailand from 1963. He lived initially in Nongkhaithen later moved to Udorn where he remained until 1973.

His role in Thailand was to deal directly with the Central IntelligenceAgency (CIA) and the BoKo 333 of Thailand. He was known to travel with adiplomatic passport and was based in Udorn.

We usually saw him returning to Vientiane with bags of money to be sentto General Vang Pao in Longcheng.

He was Vang Pao's supply man. What ever Vang Pao wanted, Thaochay couldsupply it whatever it may be.

In February 1973, the Royal Lao Government signed the Vientiane Agreementwith the Pathet Lao to end the war in Laos. All foreign troups andpersonnels were to leave the country.

As all the Thai troups and the Americans advisors left Laos, uncleThaochay was recalled back to Long Cheng.

During his two years in Long Cheng, he lived at the VIP residence at theKing's palace hill top, next to the King's palace. This officialresidence was previously occupied only by the Prime Minister and theCrown prince.

During his life, he lived like a royal prince -with everything he needs. He had everything he dreamed of -a "royal" house, 6 cars (3mercedes-benz) a pine apple and banana farm near Thadeua.

He spent all his late life in Thailand and Vientaine among diplomaticpersonnels. He travelled to U.S.A., Japan and learned a great deal aboutthe West.

After 1975, for some reasons remained unexplained, he remained inThailand as refugee living in and out of the refugee camp. But heremained proud of himself till the end.

I was amazed that he did not show his real person. For example, duringmy last visit, we went to the camp hospital to organize some referencefor him to go to Australia. He spoke to the hospital doctors in Hmong orThai and let someone else to translate for him. He acted that he did notspeak any English at all!.

Nevertheless, many foreign visitors came to talk to him about the campsituation and politics generally. He would speak frankly with them andmany people take him seriously.

As he decided to remain in Thailand and always smiled and felt confidentabout himself and hardly commented on the Hmong politicking in Thailand, many of the Hmong and Thai became suspicious of him. Many were afraid ofhim. And he did get into a lot of problems: being arrested, threat fordeportation and more.
But he always emerged victorious and remained proud of himself to the end.

A few weeks before his death, many shamans told him of his future "Theking is waiting for you". In his last message which he recorded 3 daysbefore his death, he told his mother clearly that he had to go to jointhe King.

And he left on December 15th, 1984 at 10.00 AM, Bangkok time.

His funeral turned out to be one of the biggest event in recent history.I was told by many people that people from far and near, east and west, friends and foes came to pay their last respect to the young prince.

His final departure brought many people on their knees along the narrowroad from camp no. 4 to the gate of the camp. They cried in tear, "wewill always remember you".

At last, the prince had fulfilled his duty -whatever it may be -on earth. He had returned to join the King's council in the world where he claimedhe came from. Good bye "prince".

Ntxoo (Nang) SAYKAO

86 In the 1940's our family lived in Leem Kab Sab, in the Nong Het area. After the death of Saykao, our family began to have conflict with otherHmong, especially the Hmong Ly. The major problems seemed to be relatedto the way of life in the area. Our family were heavily involve infarming. The Ly were in animal husbandary. The Ly's animals wouldventured into the Thao's farms and the Hmong would shoot the invadinganimals. The rule was simple. If the animals died inside the farm, theowner had to pay all the crop dammage and the kill animal would bedivided into two half and the farmer would buy his half. But if theanimal died outside the farm, there could be a hearing to determine ifthe animal is really offending or the animal was shot intentionally. Asour family are related to the Lao (Kia Tong) and with the help of ourHmong Thao relative, Tooj Vas at Npaj Piv, our family always won thecases.

During this time, we had contact with another Hmong Thao branch inLuangprabang and one member, Yawg Ntsoov Txim Thoj from Luangprabang(LPB) had visited the family.

Not long after that, Kia Tong 's family was more interested in sociallife rather than maintain their power. At the same time, Lyfong (who isKia Tong's son-in-law) understood the importance of education and pushedhis children to study hard. Soon, Lyfong family took over the rule ofthe Hmong. The Ly was then in power. There was rumours that a sectionof the Ly clan would take revenge.

Our family, the Saykaos, under the leadership of Nyiaj Lwm took therunours seriously. Nyiaj Lwm decided to shift the whole Saykao clan to anew village in the middle of a jungle between Leej Khab Sab and theVietnamese border. They named the village Npav Pej (Ba Pae).

The family had one good year at the new village. Then problem started.

Npav Pej was situated about one kilometre from the telegraph route wherethe Vietminh and the French use as their passage. When the Vietminhwanted to ambush the French, they passed through the village. When theyreturned to Vietnam, the French came to the village and fined thevillagers for supporting the Vietminh. The Vietminh would do the same ifthe French passed by.

From the second year on and for the next four years, our family at NpajPej, lived in the jungle. During the day, the men would returned to thevillage to feed the animals or gather food. At night, they returned tothe jungle to live in hiding, in different places during the years.

On the fifth years, our family decided to move to Naj Pis, on theVietnamese side to join the Thao clan there.

Not long after, the family move back to Npav Pej after Tooj Vas groupleft for Luangprabang and after the death of yawg Xov Txais.

Nyiaj Lwm had to made the biggest decision in his life. To join theVietnamese or the French?. Finally, he decided to join the French, thefree world.

He personally went to submitt himself to the French at Tsuam Meej. Hewas arrested and locked up. The family was forced to pay a ransom forhis release: 40 silver bars, 10 pigs, 10 cows and 150 roosters.

The Hmong Ly began to spread more rumours that the Saykao clan would becastrated to the last male. Our family had enough reason to fear thethreat. The whole clan decided to move away from Nong Het area and tolead a new life at Luangprabang.

When they were crossing the Naj Cheeb river, on a suspension bridge, grandmother Nyiaj Lwm recalled, "The Hmong Ly were one side of the bridgeand shook the bidge so violently that we almost could make to the otherside".

On their way, the family stopped at Phuam Loom. Faiv Ntaj, Yawg TxhiajSuav, Yawg Nyiaj Lwm and yawg laus Nyiaj Tsa left for Xiengkhouang (XKG)to get a truck to transport the children to Luangprababng. Whilewaiting, Vang Pao (VP) and his father heard about the exodus. Vang Paocame to Phuam Loom with horses and carriers and took the group to Hav TabSeeb. Fifteen days later, the XKG envoy returned with no truck andfound all the people were taken to Hav Tab Seeb. Nyiajlwm was furious. When he arrived at Has Tab Seeb, Yuav Txiv Neej Tswb (VP's father) cameto see him and brought an ox . He personally performed a soul calling(hu plig) for the Saykao and killed the animal and feed the family. Hegave a guarantee that he would protect the Saykao against all otherpeople. Nyiajlwm saw the sincerity and genuine intentention of VangPao's father, he agreed to stay at Hav Tab Seeb.

Six months later, Nyiajlwm got sick and died. At his death, the Saykaowere already spread out. Nchai Txos and Tooj Tuam were living at PhwvSawm; Nomvws and Xyoojlwj at Phuam Loom and Tswv Xab was in Sam Neuand Kab Yeeb was sent to study in Vietnam.

After Nyiajlwm's death, Faydang, his eldest son, became the leader of thefamily.

The family continued to face more conflicts, the idea of moving toLuangprabang was on again. But the family finally decided that ourfamily must learn to face all future conflicts. Education became thetop priority. Blia Yao (Npliaj Yob), Paj Cai (Thaochay) and Neng Chu(Neej Tswb) were sent back to school in Xiengkhuang. Nengchu started atgrade 4, Thaochay at grade 2 and Blia Yao at grade 1.
Nengchu and Blia Yao joined the army after completing grade 6 and grade5 respectively. Thaochay continued to higher education and graduated inLaw and returned to work at the provincial office at Xiengkhuang.

During that period, Phauj Sua married to Paj Vu Vang (VP youngerbrother). Nengchu married Vang Pao's younger sister. Blia Yao alsomarried Vang Pao's younger sister!. Thaochay married Nao Ko Ly'sdaughter (as his second wife) at Xiengkhuang. Ly Vang Tongpao just tookPaj away as his second wife and never returned to finalise the wedding.

Faiv Ntaj (Faydang), Nyiajlwm's eldest son became the Saykao leader. Hisfirst marriage was abruptly terminated after the birth of a son, ThaoPhia (in Texas USA). He married the second wife but only had one boy,Nom Khue (France). He then married the third wife, an orphan girl fromthe Lao clan called Youa. From this marriage he had 8 children. And Iam the eldest boy from this third wife.

In late 1953, Txhiaj Sua moved back to Boua Loom after the Vietminhretreat.

Faiv Ntaj stayed at Hav Tabseeb and escaped the first ambushed by VangPao's troup.

Nomvws and Soob Lwj remained at Phuam Long.

Faiv Ntaj family was finally "arrested" and taken to Longkuang (HeuiKhininh) with Yawg Saiv Tsu as mention at the begining.

From 1954, Pog Nyiaj lwm and Nomvws, Soob Lwj, Tswvxab and Nchais Txosmoved to Long Kouang to join the family. When Thoj Tub returned toVietnam, Tswvxab and Nchais Txos wanted to returned with Thoj Tub butNengchu disagreed and took the two of them to Phakhao.
